Time for a Break

We finally got our permit from the Town of Payson.  We had to document where all the lighting fixtures and switches were going and we couldn't do this until Matt finalized our floor plan and we had a chance to talk with the electricians about what was actually doable.

Our handyman, Bob, brought his crew to put a new roof over the kitchen.  This was something that came up in our inspection.  Because the original roofing job was not done correctly, the rolled roofing that was installed over the kitchen was buckling and the inspector felt it wouldn't last another year. Once the shingles were off, we discovered that the plywood under the roofing material was rotted in some places and also it wasn't thick enough (old building code versus new code).  Bob replaced the bad wood and added a 2nd layer of plywood to bring the roof to code.  The facia board, which was also rotted, was replaced and soffit holes were installed to provide venting for this portion of the roof.  New rolled roofing was installed with a layer of shingles over it to give us additional life on the roof.

The kitchen currently has a 5" slope that will make it hard to design a cabinet layout since the ceiling height ranges from 80"-85". The cabinets on the north (back) wall would be flush with the ceiling while the cabinets on the south wall would have a 5" gap.  The biggest design issue is the cabinets on the west wall would start flush and finish with a 5" gap.  I can't figure out how to make that look right so I asked the handyman how hard it would be to drop the ceiling in the kitchen and he said he'd only charge us $625.  This price seemed extremely reasonable and he will do the work while we're on vacation.

Matt and I headed home on Wednesday for the first time since starting this project. He needed to get ready to go to college and I had to prepare for our vacation to Arkansas.  We were home only a couple of days before we were on the road again on Friday.  Since our route took us through Payson, we decided to stop by the house and check on the work progress.  The electricians were pulling wire like crazy.  We were a little nervous about them working while we were on vacation as we're paying them by the hour and would have preferred to be there to be sure they're working, but we can't go forward until the electrical work is finished.  We decided to cross our fingers and hope for the best!
